Meet Jen!
Jen has lived in Penrose for 22 years and is a native of Colorado with roots that go back to 1883. She has 5 acres with approximately 4 acres of flood irrigated land with 5 shares of water. The land was primarily used for alfalfa/grass and baled for personal use which yielded approximately 140 bales annually.
She has owned and operated Roc n Jens Trading Post since 2016 and has 3 rescued horses, 3 goats, 4 rescue dogs, cats, chickens, and guinea hens.
In 2012, Penrose had a devastating drought and Jen made the decision to manage her property in a different way. Instead of running water in an open ditch, she buried the pipe in two directions to save water.
In 2014, she converted her field to organic, plowed, and reseeded. The extra effort in eliminating the open ditches increased the water and yielded 600 bales of alfalfa grass annually for the next 3 years.
Also in 2014, she started her own farm-based business as a feed store delivering feed to 5 Front Range feed stores.
Jen sells a variety of products including ParaCord Pocket Halters, Dog/Goat Collars, and Reins.
She bought two Tilapia breeding tanks from the prison where she has a full time job. The tanks were converted to vermiculture bins. All seedlings are started with worm castings on her farm.
Worm harvest happens on the farm 4 times per year while supplies last.
Because her field is 100% organic and GMO-free, she was presented with the opportunity for a group of individuals to grow hemp on approximately 3 acres. 4000 clone plants were taken from the greenhouse and put in the ground in May by Jen and four others. Her field was one of the original properties to grow hemp for the first time in Penrose.
The hemp grown in her field has less than .03 %ng THC (won’t get you high) and is safe for all animals and people.
All of Roc n Jens Trading Post products are made with care just for you and your animals.
